Main area of focus in Caring for the Destination:

The main focus of this tour is the preservation of traditional small ship building, growth of small family businesses and implementation of local food and products.

Detailed description of the Caring for the Destination Initiative:

Most of the boats that we use for this cruise are traditional Croatian wooden boats, which were used for different purposes in the past. Some of them were passengers’ boats for transport of locals from one island to another, but most of them were doing sand excavations from sea area around Split. When that industry failed, they were transformed to tourist boats. Some of the boats are more than hundred years old, but of course, they have been renovated many times during their history, although the shell of the boat and the name always remains the same. Boats are family owned and in many cases, owner of the boat is also the captain and his family is working on the boat and makes their living out of this. Our company chooses those dedicated families to be our service providers and we support them in renovation and building of their boats. Shipbuilding is centuries long tradition in Croatia, which started to fail in last decades and therefore we are proud that we are keeping alive one if its important part- the small ship building industry.

Our company has created a menu that is served on boats and that is traditional Dalmatian food, which is cooked on the same way as all the Dalmatians cook it in their homes. It is a light Mediterranean cuisine with lots of vegetables, olive oil, fish and meat. Ingredients that are used for preparing the food are bought on weekly or daily basis on green markets and fish markets along the coast. We also encourage our boat owners to serve their guest with homemade products like wine, grappa, dried figues or olive oil, which are traditionally made by their families in wintertime.

The route KL3-Hidden Treasures of Dalmatia is created to promote the less known destinations and in that way, we give our contribution in development of tourism on islands that are usually hardly approachable to tourists.
